    German Frers 72 "la Peregrina"

The Virgin Islands are a group of small islands that form a kind of estuary protected from waves and strong trade winds. They are located in the Caribbean Sea, east of Puerto Rico and were once a refuge for pirates and privateers. In fact, its main navigation channel, always covered with countless sailboats, is called “Sir Francis Drake Channel”.

The archipelago has two main islands: the legendary Turtle Island, a free port for pirates and corsairs, today the nerve center of the archipelago, and Virgin Gorda.

Both are surrounded by countless small deserted islands or with some charming resort, at most where you can anchor and feel what it’s like to live in paradise.

Discover one of the best nautical paradises in the Caribbean, The British Virgin Islands (BVI) at the best time of year to sail the Caribbean: winter.

Our boat is a 70 foot steel Ketch with 5 cabins. It was designed by the most prestigious naval architect in the world, German Frers, a commission from his brother to design a solid, comfortable and reliable ship to sail around the world. The sailboat has crossed the Atlantic more than 40 times.

On board, you will have the instruction of an experienced skipper and also an instructor certified by the RYA.

The boat is rented on a per seat basis.

Plan

Our adventure begins after getting off in an air taxi on the island of Beef Island. After putting on our uniform (swimsuit and flip flops) we boarded Trellis Bay, 100 meters from the airport, where we will take our first Caribbean bath.

After this welcome, we will begin a week of island hopping, enjoying sailing, dreamy moorings, coral bottoms, filled with countless multicolored fish, exploring the caves that hid pirate treasure a few centuries ago, or simply lying on their idyllic beaches next to the palm trees of the tropics enjoying an average temperature of 28º and waters of 26º.

All this in a protected navigation area suitable for any level and nautical experience.

A small sample that you will visit:

Day 1: Reception and navigation to Jost Van Dyke and Sandy Cay.

Day 2: Sailing to Norman Island.

Day 3: Cooper Island.

Day 4: Virgin Girda (The baths).

Day 5: The sounds.

Day 6: Tortola.

Day 7: Return.

Very good approach, excellent skippers, and clear instructions throughout the cruise. The boat, “La peregrina”, is a bit dated, but that’s part of the charm — its vintage look makes the experience truly special. Highly recommended!

Excellent organisation and very professional service. The course was conducted at a high level, and the instructor, Tom, was calm, competent and great at explaining everything clearly. The base is located in a very well-organised marina in Baiona, with really good facilities. I highly recommend Julio Verne Náutica.

I've had the best experience with Julio Verne! Communication with Jessica was very clear and fast, Daniel was amazing during check in and check out and available for questions during the charter. The condition of the boat was wonderful, clean inside and out and well maintained. Thank you, and I'll be back for more!

I took the five-day Day Skipper Practical course with Julio Verne Nautica and am 100% satisfied! Jessica was very helpful and responsive right from the start and answered all of my questions. The instructor, Francisco, is an excellent teacher as well as an entertaining shipmate and good cook. We had both Day Skipper and Competent Crew students aboard Nemo (a Grand Soleil 43) and he had us working together as a team from the start. Each day started with a little theory on topics ranging from VHF and AIS to use of safety equipment and handling emergencies to everything that goes into planning long passages (and lots more). Once we were on the water (6-8 hours a day), there was real, "hands on" experience at the helm in plenty of challenging situations, including docking in tight spaces, anchoring, picking up moorings, man overboard scenarios, and more. As Day Skipper candidates, we were expected to create a passage plan for a long sail, utilizing both paper charts, electronic and other navigation tools to safely navigate the boat to our destination and back to the harbor at night. All in all, a great week, helped even more by the beauty of the Monte Real Yacht Club and the surrounding area, including the Cies Islands.
