The RYA Competent Crew course is the starting point for your sail training. The course is perfect for those who have completed our Introduction to Yachting course (Start Yachting), have done dinghy sailing, or are complete beginners.
The course can be completed in either five days and nights or three weekend (3 x 2-day) modules on board, and will give you the skills and the confidence to crew a yacht. In our Competent Crew course, you’ll learn how to:
- Trim the sails;
- Helm;
- Anchor;
- Prepare the boat for mooring/slipping (departing);
- Be actively involved in mooring/slipping;
- Row a dinghy;
- Tie knots, and loads more!
You will live on board one of our fully coded and licensed cruising yachts with a maximum of four other crew members and the skipper. Food will be provided and the cooking will be done between the skipper and the crew. There will also be the opportunity to use the facilities in the harbours most evenings and mornings.
Aside from learning the skills to be a competent crew member, you will visit beautiful harbours on the Clyde, anchorages in tranquil spots, or even stay overnight on a mooring buoy.

4 months agoI have been sailing with Go West regularly for two years now and I have done Competent Crew, Day Skipper Theory and Day Skipper Practical with them. I have also done 3 experience builders, their specialist pontoon and close quarters manoeuvres weekend and most recently a 7 day adventure sail from Largs to Oban. Next up is the VHF course. I have now sailed on 6 of their boats and with 6 of their instructors. Go West is a very well run business, with a considerable number of repeat customers. Their boats are all very well maintained and equipped and their instructors are patient, knowledgeable and polite. However, above all they are all passionate committed lifelong sailors who are keen to pass on their enthusiasm to their customers. I will definitely sail with them again.

2 months agoIt was a great holliidax, one of my best ever. Brautiful country (Hreenland), great adventure when sailing 3 days on the open ocean… I definitely consider foing with Go west sailing to Antarctica and possibly aslo to Gibraltar/Morocco

4 months agoI had an incredible week sailing along Scotland’s west coast from Largs in May 2025. We explored some stunning Scottish islands with our fantastic skipper, Danny, who made the whole trip even better. The yacht was modern, really comfortable, and a joy to sail. It was an unforgettable experience - great training, a real sense of adventure, and so much fun. I’d highly recommend it to anyone!

2 months agoIn May, we sailed with Go West Sailing under Captain Danny — and what an incredible journey it was. From start to finish, the trip was absolutely amazing. Captain Danny knows his craft inside out; he had complete command of the route, navigated safely through everything, and always made us feel secure. Beyond being a professional, he was truly the heart and soul of our group. Highly recommend Go West Sailing and Captain Danny to anyone looking for a memorable, safe, and joyful sailing experience.

8 months agoThis was a really excellent week sailing on the west coast out of Largs March 2025. we sailed across to ballycastle, back via campbelltown in some challenging conditions with an excellent skipper Peter. the boats are modern and very capable, comfortable lots of good grub. A highly recommended experience. Great training great experience.
