Riding the waves on a sailboat gives you a deep understanding of the beauty and magnitude of the ocean. The waves on this voyage are very long and slide slowly under the ship’s keel. As you relax in the slow waves of the Atlantic Ocean, you will find a more surprising marine fauna: oceanic seabirds that will accompany us at all times, schools of flying fish, tunis fishing for schools of fish and cetaceans of all kinds.
Madeira is overwhelming. Geologically, it is a spectacular archipelago, with islands brimming with exotic colors and always warm under the sun. Pearl of the Atlantic, island of eternal spring… Madeira well deserves the imaginative nicknames given to it.
From this group of Portuguese islands, we will sail to the Azores Islands, another jewel left by the wide Atlantic Ocean.
This is the second stage of a longer trip that consists of 4 stages in total, during which we will explore true nautical paradises.
You can check all the stages here on Sailwiz and sign up for one or more:
– Stage 1: from Bayonne to Madeira.
– Stage 3: through the Azores.
– Stage 4: Azores to Baiona
The journey takes place on board a 22-meter steel Ketch that is large, safe, solid and easy to navigate. On board there is space for 10 passengers, and you can spend the night in comfortable cabins. Below the deck there is also a large day area, where meals are served. The wheelhouse has comfortable sofas with panoramic views.
The crew consists of an experienced captain and a bilingual first officer (English and Spanish at least), so that there is always a person in charge on duty.
On board we will teach (to all those who dare) the profession of the navigator, with the possibility of certifying your knowledge with the RYA Competent Crew titles. It will also be possible to make the necessary miles for the Yacht Master Offshore, Yacht Master Ocean and PPER qualifications.
This is a trip for active travelers, we sailed together on this ship. Sailing experience is not required, but an active and open attitude is required. We teach you everything you need to know along the way, from sailing to steering the ship, and you disembark like an old sea wolf.
Naturally, there will also be plenty of time to relax, read a book and have stimulating conversations with fellow travelers. We sail into the night and everyone on board is assigned guards. This way, we can continue sailing and everyone on board the ship will have enough time to rest, eat and sleep in addition to sailing. However, nights at sea are magical. Due to the complete lack of light pollution, you’re not just stargazing: you can see the entire Milky Way arranged before you.
Arriving in port after a long sea voyage is an unparalleled experience. Try walking straight with those newly purchased sea legs!

a month agoVery good approach, excellent skippers, and clear instructions throughout the cruise. The boat, “La peregrina”, is a bit dated, but that’s part of the charm — its vintage look makes the experience truly special. Highly recommended!

a month agoExcellent organisation and very professional service. The course was conducted at a high level, and the instructor, Tom, was calm, competent and great at explaining everything clearly. The base is located in a very well-organised marina in Baiona, with really good facilities. I highly recommend Julio Verne Náutica.

7 months agoI've had the best experience with Julio Verne! Communication with Jessica was very clear and fast, Daniel was amazing during check in and check out and available for questions during the charter. The condition of the boat was wonderful, clean inside and out and well maintained. Thank you, and I'll be back for more!

5 months agoI took the five-day Day Skipper Practical course with Julio Verne Nautica and am 100% satisfied! Jessica was very helpful and responsive right from the start and answered all of my questions. The instructor, Francisco, is an excellent teacher as well as an entertaining shipmate and good cook. We had both Day Skipper and Competent Crew students aboard Nemo (a Grand Soleil 43) and he had us working together as a team from the start. Each day started with a little theory on topics ranging from VHF and AIS to use of safety equipment and handling emergencies to everything that goes into planning long passages (and lots more). Once we were on the water (6-8 hours a day), there was real, "hands on" experience at the helm in plenty of challenging situations, including docking in tight spaces, anchoring, picking up moorings, man overboard scenarios, and more. As Day Skipper candidates, we were expected to create a passage plan for a long sail, utilizing both paper charts, electronic and other navigation tools to safely navigate the boat to our destination and back to the harbor at night. All in all, a great week, helped even more by the beauty of the Monte Real Yacht Club and the surrounding area, including the Cies Islands.
